A Tuesday afternoon crash on the Trans-Canada Highway has claimed the life of a 50-year-old Medicine Hat resident.

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., local RCMP, fire crews and EMS responded to a location near the hamlet of Dunmore, Alberta, just east of Medicine Hat, following a collision involving a pickup truck and a semi.

According to RCMP, the semi was travelling eastbound on the highway when the driver attempted to make a left hand turn and enter a weigh scale station. The semi crossed the path of an oncoming westbound pickup truck and the pickup collided with the semi’s trailer.

The lone occupant of the pickup truck, a 50-year-old man from Medicine Hat, was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

The semi driver, a 74-year-old man from Thunder Bay, suffered no injuries. RCMP have charged the unidentified man with Failing to Turn Left Safely.

Westbound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway was detoured for several hours near Dunmore. The crash scene reopened to traffic at approximately midnight.
