The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced that Alberta will be getting a new, province-wide, area code.

Starting on April 9, 2016, residents of Alberta may be given numbers possessing an area code of 825.

The province is currently served by area codes 403, 587, and 780.

The CRTC says that the 825 area code will apply to new numbers only.

The move was prompted by information provided to the CRTC by the Canadian Numbering Administrator that Alberta would run out of phone numbers for the three previous telephone numbers by July 2016.
