While many Albertans predicted an increase in so-called sin taxes, the province’s 2015 budget included a hike in prices at the pump.

Fuel taxes will increase by four cents per litre, bringing the total provincial portion of pump taxes to 13 cents per litre.

The province receives approximately $63 million each year for every cent of fuel tax. The 2015 increase is expected to add an additional $250 million to provincial coffers and increase the province’s total annual gas pump tax take to $819 million.

Alcohol and tobacco were not exempted from a tax increase. The following tax increases will be in effect beginning March 27, 2015 at 12:01 a.m.

  • Tax on a bottle of wine will increase by 16 cents
  • Tax on a case of beer (12 cans or bottles) will increase by 90 cents
  • Tax on a carton of cigarettes will increase by $5.00

Speeding tickets are expected to be a significant source of income for the province as fines associated with lead footed motorists will increase by 35 per cent.
