The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is trying something new this year to raise funds and has launched a unique program to help support initiatives to treat injured and orphaned wildlife.

The society provides medical treatment and care for over 2500 wild animals each year and has set a holiday fundraising goal of $10,000 this year.

The animal care facility has started a Sponsor a Species campaign and created trading cards of some of its more popular patients for people to purchase or pass on as a gift.

“So the card has a picture of one of the patients that we’ve had in the past and on the back it just talks a little bit about that animal and talks about what that donation does for us,” said Andrea Hunt, Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

Sponsorship helps provide food, housing and medical treatment for animals at the facility and staff say every dollar counts.

“Really that goes a long way in our hospital. We have a really small budget, it's about $350,000 a year, and thus far this year we've taken in over 2200 patients, so if you just do the math on those numbers you know that the money stretches really far and that it really helps lots of patients that come into our clinic,” said Hunt.

The fundraising campaign runs through to the end of December and so far about $1400 has been raised.
