Members of the RCMP police dive team have located and recovered the body of a young man who was in a vehicle which left the David Thompson Highway and plunged into Abraham Lake.

On Wednesday afternoon, Rocky Mountain House RCMP officers, EMS, fire crews and Search and Rescue members responded to Abraham Lake, located approximately 130 kilometres west of Rocky Mountain House, following reports of a car in the water.

Prior to the arrival of emergency crews, witnesses entered the lake and attempted to access the car but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Thursday, the RCMP dive team arrived at the lake and the body of the man was retrieved.

The identity of the deceased has not been released as officers attempt to notify the man’s next of kin. The make and model of the car have not been released, but RCMP confirm the vehicle had an out of province licence plate.

According to RCMP officials, alcohol and speed are believed to have factored in the single vehicle crash.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or the events leading up to the crash on Highway 11, is asked to contact the Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachment at 403-845-2881.
