Officials with Alberta Health Services have confirmed another case of measles in the Calgary Zone.

According to AHS, the patient who contracted the measles, Calgary's eighth case of 2014, is an adult. This case of measles is not related to travel and the patient does not have paperwork indicating they had been immunized

Dr. Judy MacDonald, Medical Officer of Health for AHS - Calgary Zone, says the patient was an employee of the Asian Buffet restaurant in the city's southwest.

"When the case was infectious, they (the patient) were at a number of restaurants," said Dr. MacDonald. "Patrons of any of those restaurants may have been exposed to measles."

"It's important for people to know their immunization status and, if they're not up to date with their measles vaccine, to get (vaccinated)."

Members of the public may have been exposed to the virus at the following restaurants on the dates provided:

Asian Buffet - 9125 Bonaventure Drive S.W.

  • April 8, April 10-12, April 13-15, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and midnight

People who visited the aforementioned restaurants may develop measles in the 21 days following exposure and are asked to monitor themselves for symptoms of the virus. Individuals displaying measles symptoms are asked to stay home and contact Health Link Alberta 1-866-408-5465.

Symptoms of measles include:

  • High fever (which begins approximately 10 days after exposure, lasts for up to a week)
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Red and watery eyes
  • Small white spots inside the cheeks
  • A rash which begins on the face and neck and spreads towards the patient’s extremities

Anyone born before 1970 is believed to be immune to measles, while people born in 1970 or later are advised to receive immunization against the virus.
