A Calgary family, whose camper van was struck by a marked RCMP cruiser just outside Vancouver, is now out of hospital.

Witnesses to the crash say the family of four was making a right turn when they were struck by the cruiser.

The van flipped over following the crash and hit a tree.

Afterwards, several people ran to the scene to help out, saying the cruiser was emitting smoke and was possibly on fire.

One man, known only as Wayne, said he went to help the officer in the crashed vehicle. “I went to the passenger side and cut the airbags. It was starting to smoke under the hood, so we had to extinguish it.”

Sabrina O’Krainetz was one of many witnesses who helped the family. “We got the children out of the van and laid them on their backs. The little girl had a concussion. The police car was smoking, everyone got the police officer out.”

All of the victims have been released from hospital.

RCMP have confirmed that the cruiser was travelling at ‘code three’, which means it was en route to a call with lights and sirens on.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
