A 52-year-old woman from Calgary has been sentenced after submitting a guilty plea in connection to a 2012 incident in which a small dog was thrown from a second floor balcony into a fence, picked up, and thrown over the fence.

Chewy, a Chihuahua , was injured in the August 27, 2012 attack which was reported to the Calgary Humane Society by witnesses.

“Criminal Code charges were warranted here due to the violent nature of the crime,” said Brad Nichols, Manager, Animal Cruelty Investigations with Calgary Humane Society. “Incarceration reflects the concerning nature of the offense and the prohibition will ensure that future animals are spared similar fates.”

On Tuesday, Valerie Penny was sentenced in connection to the incident.

Penny received a sentence of:

  • 60 days incarceration
  • 6 months probation
  • 10 year prohibition from owning or caring for animals

Officials with the Calgary Humane Society confirm the dog has recovered from its injuries and has been adopted into a new, safe home.
