The full city block where the downtown YWCA is located has been sold as part of a plan to raise cash for the organization.

“The sale of this property is a significant milestone as we work towards ensuring the YWCA remains vibrant and ready to adapt to the needs of women in our community well into the future,” says Sue Tomney, Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA.

The YWCA has been at the location since 1969 and has supported hundreds of thousands of women with shelter and short-stay accommodations, employment and language training, childcare and parenting programs.

Great Gulf Group of Companies bought the site. It has not yet released details but says it has a long-term development plan.

“Calgary is an exciting city and this property will provide a perfect opportunity for Great Gulf, one of North America’s leading real estate developers, to establish itself as a premium builder in Western Canada,” said Christopher Wein, President of Great Gulf.

The deal is one of the largest downtown transactions in recent history. Great Gulf is providing a free two year lease to the YWCA as it transitions to a new home. It’s expected a site will be chosen early in the new year.
