Organizers with the Magic of Christmas, a charitable group which assists the city’s less fortunate during the holiday season, are facing their second major hurdle of 2014.

The organization requires a large increase in donations over the next few weeks to ensure they’re able to leave something under the tree for 5,000 Calgarians identified as worthy recipients.

Donations are way down and time is running out. In previous years, the boxes at the Magic of Christmas warehouse would be filled with toys, clothing and food, but this year, many shelves remain bare.

“We cannot do this without the help of the people in the community,” Clayton Busher, Magic of Christmas vice president. “Everybody has had tough times in life, we’re just hoping somebody will try and help somebody else in those tough times.”

On Christmas Eve, volunteers, dressed in holiday garb, fill dozens of Calgary Transit vehicles with gifts and deliver the items to homes, hospitals and shelters.

Earlier this fall, the Magic of Christmas found itself without a warehouse, but a generous Calgarian answered the call and provided the charity with temporary industrial space.
