A Friday evening crash in the city’s southeast claimed one life and sent two young adults to hospital for treatment of potentially life threatening injuries.

According to police, at approximately 9:20 p.m., an officer in a marked CPS unit witnessed a suspicious black, 2003 Lincoln Aviator in the vicinity of 36 St. and 8 Ave. S.E. The officer is believed to have activated their unit's lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the vehicle over.

The driver of the suspect vehicle is alleged to have fled the scene. The officer pursued the suspect vehicle northbound on 36 St. S.E. and eastbound on Memorial Drive for several blocks.

Emergency crews responded to the front yard of a home near the intersection of Memorial Drive and 44 St. S.E. after the suspect vehicle struck a tree.

According to Calgary Fire Department officials, firefighters located a large SUV wrapped around a tree and two injured people next to the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a deceased male, the driver, entangled in the wreckage.

The identity of the deceased, a man in his early twenties, has not been released. Police confirm the deceased is a Calgarian.

EMS crews transported the two passengers, a 17-year-old female and a 21-year-old man, to hospital. The patients had suffered multiple injuries and were considered to be in serious, potentially life threatening condition. As of Saturday afternoon, the condition of the two patients has stabilized.

Memorial Drive was closed for several hours following the crash.

An investigation into the collision is underway. ASIRT is investigating CPS involvement in the incident.
