The University of Calgary says it is freezing salaries for executive and senior leaders for the next year to deal with a 1.4 percent shortfall in funding from the province.

Salaries for executive and senior leadership teams will be frozen from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

"As the university looks for ways to deal with the budget shortfall, a salary freeze for our executive and senior leadership teams is a fiscally prudent and responsible step to take," said Dru Marshall, provost and vice-president (academic).

Last month, the provincial government cut funding for post-secondary institutions in Alberta for 2015 -16 by 1.4 percent and said another 2.7 percent cut can be expected in 2016 -17.

The U of C says it has been reviewing its budget since the announcement and that it is facing a shortfall of about $37 to $47 million by 2016-17.

Salaries and benefits represent 58 percent of the university's expenditures and are the largest expense .

Officials say a decision for merit increases for Management and Professional Staff is currently on hold but that salary increases for academic and AUPE staff members will be based on collective bargaining, which is currently underway.
