A Kentucky man has been fined and will face a lengthy weapons prohibition after he was caught with a concealed handgun in his vehicle while trying to cross into Canada in early July.

Roy Fielding Neel Jr., 67, of Waddy, Kentucky, was convicted on October 28 in Lethbridge Provincial Court.

On July 3, he attempted to enter the country at the port of Chief Mountain and Canada Border Services Agency officers uncovered a loaded, .38 calibre semi-automatic pistol hidden inside a toolbox in his pickup truck.

Neel had not declared the firearm to customs officials and initially told them he did not have any firearms.

He was arrested and released on a recognizance.

As for the conviction, Neel was given a $4,000 fine, a 10 year weapons prohibition, and he was also ordered to forfeit the seized firearm.

The CBSA says that all travellers need to declare all items they are bringing into the country, including any firearms or weapons.

Failure to do so may lead to prosecution.
