Police say they’ve arrested and charged a man in connection with the assault of a taxi driver in April of this year.

At about 4 p.m. on April 18, a driver picked up two men in the 2200 block of Centre Street and drove them into downtown Calgary.

Before they reached the appointed destination, the pair indicated to the driver that they wanted to get out, so the driver complied and pulled over in the area of 6 Avenue and 1 Street S.W.

Once the driver stopped, however, the passenger seated in the front of the cab suddenly slapped the driver in the face, and tore his dashboard camera out of its housing.

Both men then fled without paying for the fare.

The driver suffered only minor injuries in the attack, but the camera was significantly damaged, costing him several hundred dollars to repair.

Police arrested Jeffrey Thomas Gasson, 32, in northwest Calgary without incident.

Gasson has been charged with:

  • Assault
  • Mischief to property
  • Transportation fraud

He is expected to appear in court on September 14.
