A new chapter in the lives of two thousand first year students began Sunday at the University of Calgary.

They moved into residence but they didn’t have to do it alone. An army of four hundred volunteers was there to help make that transition smooth for students and their parents.

“It was really organized,” says first year student Melani Lunde. “We got to the parking lot and they told us where to go and then everybody moved my stuff in for me.”

Melani’s mother, Marilyn Lunde says it was a welcoming atmosphere. “We got to meet other kids in the staging areas and the camaraderie and the hooting and the hollering in the parking lot was just so great.”

The University of Calgary has been hosting move in day for many years. There are also student and parent orientation sessions so both sides know what to expect during this first year.

“Our first priority is getting people in and getting them into their rooms quickly,” says Randy Maus Associate Director for Resident Services. “ Then after it gives the parents and students the time they need to take care of the things they need to take care of. “

After everyone is moved in; the university hosted a meet and greet barbeque to give the students the chance to meet some of their fellow students.
