An afternoon crash at a highway intersection northeast of Airdrie has claimed the life of a man in his thirties and sent a young boy to hospital.

According to EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux, emergency crews responded to the intersection of Highway 72 and Highway 791 shortly after 1:30 p.m. following reports of a crash.

On scene, an EMS crew encountered a damaged mini-van and a damaged car. A man believed to be in his thirties, the lone occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

A 10-year-old boy, a passenger in the backseat of the mini-van, was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by ambulance in stable, non-life threatening condition.

The driver of the mini-van, a woman in her thirties, was assessed by EMS but did not require additional medical treatment.

RCMP are investigating the crash.
