Alberta Parks is warning people using some trailhead parking lots in Kananaskis Country to watch out for marauding moose.

Moose have been spotted in the parking lots of Chester Lake and Burstall Pass trailheads. Alberta Parks said the animals are coming into the parking lots to lick salt off of the sides of vehicles.

People should stay at least 30 metres away from the large animals, which can be dangerous. If a moose is blocking you from your vehicle, Alberta Parks recommends using a remote door alarm or car horn to scare them away.

Although the warning is in place for this specific area, moose can be encountered anywhere in K-Country at any time of year, and people are advised to take the following actions to avoid a conflict:

  • Keep pets on leashes at all times
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep your distance from wild animals and yield to moose on the trail
  • Never get between a cow and her calf

Report all aggressive moose encounters immediately to 403-591-7755.
