The northbound lanes of Macleod Trail were closed to traffic for several hours following a Friday morning crash in the area of 15 Avenue S.E. that proved fatal.

Officers at the scene tell CTV that at about 10:30 a.m., a Jeep Liberty was eastbound on 15 Avenue S.E., turning north onto Macleod Trail when the vehicle struck a woman.

According to EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux, the pedestrian, an 82-year-old woman, sustained serious, undisclosed injuries in the crash. Two bystanders attended to the victim until EMS arrived at the crash scene.

The woman was transported by ambulance to the Foothills Hospital in seious, potentially life threatening condition.

Police confirm the victim succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty was not injured in the crash.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factos to the collision.
