A young woman is dead following a Saturday morning shooting outside of a Beltline bar.

Shortly before 3:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to the intersection of 11 Ave. and 1 St. S.W. following reports of a shooting near the entrance to the Bronco Smokehouse & Saloon.

“I guess there were twelve rapid fire gunshots,” said Dean Cundey, a visitor to Calgary, who heard the shots from his hotel room.“Seven evenly spaced, three very rapid ones and a couple more.”

Cundey said he waited for the sound of sirens before gathering the nerve to peer out his hotel room window to the street below. “There were about six police cruisers and a lot of interest.”

EMS attended to an unidentified woman, believed to be in her mid 20s, suffering from a gunshot to her torso. Her injuries proved fatal and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the shooting was not a targeted attack and the victim appears to have been an innocent bystander. A number of shots were fired from the street towards the building. Police have not confirmed if the shots originated from a vehicle.

According to one witness, a silver Volkswagen Jetta sedan was seen driving away from the scene at a high rate of speed following the shooting.

CPS Staff Sergeant Michael Cavilla says, given the number of shots fired, it's surprising there were no other reports of injuries.

"It's purely a godsend that more people were not injured in this incident gven the number of shell casings on the scene," said Staff Sgt. Cavilla. "As a police service, we're deeply concerned about this."

"We have no idea who the target was."

Police transported several witnesses to CPS headquarters for questioning.

The suspect in the shooting is described as a black male believed to be in his 20s.

The intersection has been closed to traffic during the police investigation. Police have not released an estimated time for the reopening.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.

Saturday morning's death is Calgary's 23rd homicide of 2014.
