Calgary police were called to the SAIT campus on Wednesday morning after an employee was reportedly threatened by a man who was initially thought to have a weapon in his possession.

Officers were called to Heritage Hall at about 11:50 a.m. and initiated a search for a suspect.

Police and campus security were able to determine that the suspect left campus soon after making the threat.

They say that there was no threat to the school so it was not locked down as a result of the incident.

Some students say it was a bit unusual to see such a large police presence on campus.

“I was in the building where it was happening and the second I walked out that’s when everything went down,” said Brandon Tetz.

“There was about five or six officers that came into the building. There was officers that had assault rifles in their hand, it was apparent that they were looking for somebody,” said Zach Laing. “I came outside and officers started pushing people away from the scene. I had seen tactical units enter the building and then come out about 10 to 15 minutes later.”

The suspect was located at a home in the Sandstone area a short time later and was taken into custody without incident.

Police say they found a handgun-shaped lighter in his possession and charges are pending.
