Commuters living in and around Calgary will soon have an easier time to get around thanks to a new and improved transit plan funded through the NDP government.

Through a $187M investment from Alberta’s Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP), the city will be seeing many different enhancements to improve accessible, rider-friendly public transit.

The investment includes:

  • Bus-only lanes or roads, LRT electrical upgrades, and rapid transit projects for Calgary’s 17 Avenue S.E. Transitway and S.W. Transitway
  • A new transit facility for Airdrie
  • A new transit hub in Canmore
  • A bus storage facility in Banff

Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation, says the improvements provide benefits for both riders and the environment. “Our government is committed to investing in infrastructure that gets Albertans moving while driving economic growth.”

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is enthusiastic about the new investment, saying they will improve the public transit options for many residents.

GreenTRIP provides funding to municipalities in support of local sustainable public transit projects.

A similar investment was made in Edmonton last week, but the funding was just one third of the money being offered to Calgary.
