Thousands of people gathered on the grounds outside of the Alberta Legislature on Sunday to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Premier Rachel Notley and her 12 member cabinet.

“Today we open a new chapter in the story of Alberta,” said Premier Notley. “From our earliest days, Albertans have worked as hard as anyone to forge a brighter future. People from all walks of life and from every part of the world, have joined together on a common journey. And on that journey we’ve been guided by enduring values.  Albertans are hard-working. We are entrepreneurial. And we are relentlessly optimistic. We believe that tomorrow can be a better day. And that we must work hard to make it happen. That’s who we are as Albertans.”

The cabinet consists of:

  • Rachel Notley (Edmonton-Strathcona) – Premier, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations
  • Brian Mason (Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood) – Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Government House Leader
  • Deron Bilous (Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview) – Minister of Municipal Affairs and Service Alberta, Deputy Government House Leader
  • David Eggen (Edmonton-Calder) – Minister of Education and Culture and Tourism
  • Sarah Hoffman (Edmonton-Glenora) – Minister of Health and Seniors
  • Lori Sigurdson (Edmonton-Riverview) - Minister of Innovation, Advanced Education, and Jobs
  • Oneil Carlier (Whitecourt-Ste. Anne) - Minister of Agriculture and Forestry
  • Marg McCuaig-Boyd (Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley) - Minister of Energy
  • Irfan Sabir (Calgary-McCall) - Minister of Human Services
  • Kathleen Ganley (Calgary-Buffalo) - Minister of Justice and Aboriginal Relations
  • Joe Ceci (Calgary-Fort) - Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board
  • Shannon Phillips (Lethbridge-West) - Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

Notley noted the diversity of her cabinet, pointing out the appointed members are a blend of the young and the old, gay and straight, and includes an equal number of men and women.

"For the first time in years we have an efficient and lean cabinet," said Premier Notley. "This cabinet is built to work.”

Under the previous regime, Premier Jim Prentice's cabinet consisted of 20 members including the premier.

Notley is Alberta’s first NDP premier, the province’s 17th premier, and the second female to serve as Alberta’s premier.
