The Calgary chapter of a Christian relief organization has announced that they are sending a Disaster Assistance Response Team to Nepal in order to help with recovery efforts following the earthquake on April 25, 2015.

Samaritan's Purse says that the organization, along with its partners are working to assess the damage inflicted by the massive 7.8 magnitude quake on Saturday morning.

A team of experienced individuals, including many from Canada have been deployed to the region to help with emergency shelter, water, hygiene kits, medical care, and other relief.

“We are urgently asking Canadians to partner with us through their donations and prayer as we rush to provide help for the suffering and grieving people of Nepal,” said Fred Weiss, Executive Director of Samaritan’s Purse Canada in a release. “They desperately need the help of every Canadian right now.”

The earthquake was the worst to hit the region in over 80 years and it was followed by a strong 6.6 magnitude aftershock. Smaller aftershocks have been felt through the region in the days since the first disaster.

Donations are now being accepted  to aid the work of the Samaritan's Purse in Nepal and around the world.

Donations can be made by calling 1-800-663-6500, or by visiting the website for Samaritan's Purse.

The Canadian government is asking concerned families to phone 1-800-387-3124.
