It’s a first for Banff National Park.

In December, scientists stumbled upon the first bat hibernacula ever recorded in the park.

They found the two hibernating bats by accident.

Parks Canada says they went into a cave along the Icefields Parkway to replace a battery on a piece of bat-detecting equipment when they made the discovery.

It’s the first time bats have been found overwintering in the area.

Researchers also found evidence suggesting the bats have been living in the cave for a while.
