A 38-year-old Claresholm man who was found guilty in the murder of a retired Vulcan farmer is appealing his conviction.

In October, Timothy Engel was found guilty of a first degree murder charge and a charge of indignity to human remains in connection to the January 2012 death of 77-year-old Otto "Bunty" Loose.

The dismembered body of the murdered senior was located in a wooded area near Bragg Creek, several days after Loose disappeared from his Vulcan home.

The husband of Otto Loose's daughter confirms the family received notification of the appeal request from Victims Services.

Engel is appealing the conviction on the basis he did not receive a fair trial.
