Linda Mah-Ford and Max, the Schnauzer, continue to recover from the injuries they sustained during an unprovoked attack on Tuesday in a green space near Springbank Cres. S.W at the hands of a large dog, possibly a Great Dane.

“He just went right around me and grabbed (Max) by the back of the neck and started just viciously attacking him,” recalls Linda.

The dogs were separated and the offending dog’s owner asked Linda if she was alright.

“I looked down and realized I had a hole in my leg,” said Linda. “I said ‘It looks like he’s bitten me’ and he took off. He just took off.”

Linda, who had been training for an upcoming marathon, suffered a bite to her leg which required more than 20 stitches to close, and Max’s subsequent surgeries cost more than $3,000.

Animal Services is investigating the attack and a search is underway for the large brown dog, possibly a Great Dane, and the dog’s owner.

“The person in care and control of the dog at the time was a Caucasian male, approximately six feet tall, 220 pounds, and he was wearing a t-shirt at the time of the attack,” said Abdul Rafih of Animal & Bylaw Services.

For Linda, the actions of the dog owner are puzzling.

“I am curious why he did it,” said Linda. “I can’t imagine why anyone would do it like that unless you have something to hide.”

Linda hopes she can resume her marathon training by the end of the summer and she’s set her sights on a competition in Tokyo in 2015.
