It was brief but powerful – a huge storm came out of nowhere, taking many residents of Calgary by surprise on Thursday evening.

The storm left behind extensive damage, with many southern parts of the city taking the full impact of the weather system.

Several large trees were felled in Deer Run, crashing on top of vehicles and blocking many roads.

Officials say that at least one home was damaged and there were power lines downed everywhere.

There were also reports of flash flooding and hail, but luckily, no one was injured.

The Calgary Fire Department was also busy attending the scene of several lightning strikes.

Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk says that while there was no fire sparked, some electrical appliances in several homes were affected.

“That I know of right now, there were three homes in MacKenzie Towne that were struck by lightning and all three of them in the roof area. In some of them the electricity conducted down through the wiring and affected some of the lighting appliances. Crews are on scene at all three of those.”

The clean up will continue on Friday.
