Police say that a man is dead after he crashed his motorbike into a power pole in southeast Calgary on Thursday night.

At just after 9:30 p.m., police were called to the scene along 18 Street S.E. in Quarry Park.

They say the man, in his 20s, died almost instantly when he hit the pole. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

He has not been identified and the investigation into what caused the crash is still ongoing, but police say that speed and rider inexperience may have been possible causes.

Police also dealt with another motorcycle crash on Thursday night.

A few hours before the fatal crash in Quarry Park, police were called to the scene of another motorcycle crash.

A motorcyclist and truck collided at 17 Avenue and 25A Street S.W.

The male rider suffered serious injuries as a result and was taken to Foothills Hospital where he is expected to recover.

July is the city’s Motorcycle Awareness Month, and the CPS is focused on educating the public about safe riding whether or not they have motorbikes themselves.

They say that all drivers have a responsibility to drive safe.

According to police, the fatal crash in Quarry Park is the third motorcyclist killed in Calgary in 2015.
