There has been an outpouring of support for the family and friends of a young boy tragically killed in a skateboarding accident on Tuesday morning.
Duncan McRae and his friends were longboarding down a small hill in the back alley at the 100 block of Millrise Blvd. S.W. at about 11:30 a.m.
Witnesses say the boys were speeding down the hill when one of them lost control, and crashed into the wire between two fence posts.
McRae was wearing a helmet and full safety gear, but his neck struck a fence cable.
He sustained a severe injury as a result of the crash.
A neighbour, Iris Gosselin, recalled the scene. "They said he was going too fast when he came down, out of control, and couldn't stop."
Bystanders, including an off-duty paramedic, rushed to help the bleeding boy, even performing CPR.
When emergency crews arrived, they rushed him to the Rockyview Hospital where he had emergency surgery, but he could not be saved.
A memorial page has since been started on Facebook which includes comments from well wishers and photos of Duncan.
A makeshift memorial has also been set up at the site where McRae died that has been steadily growing throughout the day.
McRae was a student at Samuel W. Shaw school. The school is now working out plan to help grieving students.
One of his friends, Josh Hughes, said that he loved skateboarding. "He loves the air through his hair and everything. Freak for speed."
Police’s Victim Services workers are helping the boy’s family as well as his friends.
