Residents in Royal Vista and Royal Oak will be feeling a bit safer now that a new fire hall has opened in their community.

A display of lights and sirens officially kicked off operations at the building, which includes fire protection, EMS and even a satellite station for the Calgary Police Service.

The facility was also built with a number of environmental features like solar panels, a green roof and even a rain garden.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says it is an important thing to have in the community.

“It is a fire hall, it is a place for Calgary Police Service, from EMS as well as Community Standards and Bylaw officers. They are able to work together in this beautiful, environmentally sustainable building to serve the community, not only the residential neighbourhood, but this is also a major growth corridor for business and industry in the Royal Vista business park, so it’s a really really nice use of city resources to enable growth in part of the city,” he said.

The building cost $17M to build, with that funding covered by the city and the province.
