It’s the day that all hockey fans have been waiting for and the league has chosen Calgary to be the prime location for a big party to begin the 2015-2016 season.

The Flames will be taking on the Vancouver Canucks at the Saddledome at 7 p.m., but it’s just the culmination of a big party that has been growing in pitch since Tuesday afternoon.

The celebration in the city began on Stephen Avenue, where cheering fans were greeted by Johnny Gaudreau behind the wheel of a Zamboni, handing out tickets.

The excitement over the team is something to cheer about too because it was only a year ago when no one believed the club to be anywhere but at the bottom of the standings.

Of course, the Flames exceeded everyone’s expectations, lasting through to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

They’re now all hoping for an even better show this time around.

The celebration continues at Fort Calgary, beginning at 3 p.m. and running until puck drop at 7 p.m.
