A Calgary police officer will not face criminal charges after a patrol rifle was stolen from his personal vehicle on April 4, 2015.

The officer went to a restaurant on Crowfoot Terrace N.W. and left the rifle in his personal vehicle inside a locked hard cover carrying case. Inside the case there were also two magazines containing 28 rounds each. He had been taking the rifle home to clean while off duty.

When he returned to his vehicle, he found it had been broken into and the rifle case and contents were gone. The rifle was later recovered.

A thorough criminal investigation has recommended that no charges be laid against the officer.

An internal investigation will continue under the Police Act to look at the officer’s judgement, Service policies and other factors.
