Authorities say that one person has been killed in a crash involving a semi and freight train in northwestern Alberta on Tuesday morning.

At about 1:30 a.m., officials with CN say that a semi ran into a northbound train just southeast of Peace River.

CN says that the driver and sole occupant of a semi was killed in the crash along Highway 2.

Eleven empty cars also derailed in the incident. Government officials confirm that there have been no spills of dangerous goods.

None of the train crew was injured in the crash.

Officials add that all the lights and signals were working properly at the time of the crash.

A detour has been setup around the incident. Northbound traffic will detour west on Railway Avenue within the Village of Nampa, east on Highway 683, and back to Highway 2.

Southbound traffic will use the same detour in the opposite direction.

The driver of the semi has not been identified.
