Redford is no longer pPremier, but fallout over a planned penthouse suite to be built in a government building in Alberta’s capital is continuing.

The top floor suite was supposed to have been built in the Old Federal Building and would have included:

  • Sleeping quarters for Redford and her daughter
  • A dining area
  • A den
  • A butler’s pantry
  • Elevator access

Ric McIver, Alberta’s Infrastructure Minister, says he put an end to the proposal as soon as he heard about it.

“I didn't feel that a residence was in the public interest and I made it clear right away that it wouldn't happen and that was it,” said McIver last week. “It's quite sad that Ms. Redford thought it was acceptable to change order, to put this suite in the federal building for her to use.”

“It's just unbelievable.”

Now, the Wildrose are calling on the government to request an immediate RCMP investigation into the proposal.

Rob Anderson, the Wildrose Finance Critic, says the Federal Building renovation has been underway for the past five years and it is projected to cost taxpayers $375M.

“What happened here was clearly unlawful and did not comply with the government’s process of approving funds and yet those funds were still paid out,” Anderson told the media at his constituency office on Tuesday.

He says that if police find no evidence of a criminal offence, the province should then move forward with a judicial inquiry or investigation by the Auditor General.
