Search and rescue specialists have recovered an injured man following a Friday afternoon avalanche in Banff National Park.

According to Parks Canada officials, shortly after noon, the skier exited the Sunshine Village ski boundary on Goat’s Eye Mountain and walked onto a corniced ridge. The cornice fell, creating an avalanche of a size 2 magnitude.

The skier fell approximately 550 metres (1800 feet).

The man had been skiing with his brother and father.

Sunshine Village Ski Patrol, Banff EMS, Parks Canada, and Alpine Helicopters responded to the avalanche scene.

The injured man was located by Parks Canada visitor safety specialists atop avalanche debris and transported to the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital. The extent of the man's injuries required additional resources and the patient was airlifted to a Calgary area hospital.
