The parents of the accused in Tuesday’s mass stabbing in Brentwood say they are struggling to make sense of their son’s alleged actions.

CPS Insp. Doug de Grood, father of 22-year-old Matthew de Grood, held back tears as he delivered an emotional statement on Thursday afternoon.

The veteran Calgary police officer and his wife Susan offered their condolences to the families of the victims.

"We hope someday we will have some answers," said Doug de Grood. "Regardless it won't bring the victims back, but we'd do anything to do just that.

Doug de Grood described his son as a great kid who was full of love, kindness and respect for others.

He had a great future ahead of him," Doug de Grood said, noting that his son had recently been accepted into law school.

"We are shocked and devastated and we are trying to make sense of happened."

The statement by Doug de Grood followed a CPS update on the progress in the ongoing investigation into Tuesday’s homicides which claimed five young lives.

Kevin Brookwell of the Calgary Police Services said Matthew de Grood’s activities leading up to the stabbing deaths of five young people form a significant part of the ongoing investigation into the worst mass murder in Calgary’s history.

Matthew de Grood faces five counts of first-degree murder in connection to the stabbing attack.

De Grood’s lawyer Allan Fay said Justice of the Peace ordered his client to receive an assessment at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre and Matthew remains in custody,

Matthew de Grood is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, 2014.
