Calgary drivers are being reminded to take extra caution as they prepare to take their kids to the first day of school next week.

That’s because of new caps on speed limits, approved by council, really take effect Monday morning.

Earlier this summer, Calgary city council approved a policy to change the speed limits in playground and school zones.

Under the new rules, drivers will have to slow down to 30 km/h between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Council was able to make the change after the province handed over control of those zones to municipalities.

Tara Pasco, a parent of school age children says "when it comes to the safety of our kids I don't think we can go too slow for too long, it's really not a problem for me."

However, not everyone is on board with the new rules. Mayor Naheed Nenshi said that he applauded council’s initiative to improve safety, but the new times could reach too far, especially in the winter.

Police also say that any warning period about the new limits and times is over and they won’t hold back from stopping drivers and handing out tickets.

“This change is really about improving safety in areas where we see high volumes of children,” said Staff Sergeant Paul Stacey with the Calgary Police Service in a release. “These new hours are reflective of the times we see schools and playgrounds being used, and are consistent and easy to remember for drivers.”

Crews worked throughout the month of August to change the information on almost 5,000 school and playground zone signs.
