Members of the Airdrie RCMP detachment have reopened the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 566 following a fatal Thursday morning crash.

The collision occurred at 10:40 a.m. at a location approximately 17 kilometres south of Irricana, near the village of Kathyrn. A semi tractor-trailer unit collided with the passenger side of a Ford Fusion in the intersection of the two highways.

“There was a northbound semi travelling on Highway 9 which collided with a vehicle that was coming through the intersection of Highway 566,” said District Chief Dax Huba of Rocky View County Fire Services.

The passenger of the Ford Fusion, a woman in her 70's, was taken by STARS to hospital in critical life threatening condition. EMS has confirmed the woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

The driver of the car, also in his 70's, was taken to hospital by ground ambulance in stable condition. His injuries are described as serious.

The semi truck driver suffered minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.

Charges are not being considered against either driver.
