Hundreds of people converged on City Hall Friday evening to condemn the violence and loss of life in Gaza and Israel.
After some violence at a similar rally last week, Friday’s gathering remained peaceful.
Nearly 1,000 Palestinian supporters rallied along with roughly 100 Israeli supporters.
Pro-Palestinian organizers called it a rally for peace, but as the brutal conflict nears its 20th day – and the death toll continues to climb – even here the crowds don’t mix.
“I see some people from school across the street with the Israelis. I don’t know why they can’t come over here,” says Ala Buzreba.
At times the crowd became heated. A small group of young men – some wearing shemagh’s pulled over their faces – created concern for the dozens of police officers working to keep order.
While speaking to people at the rally, it’s clear they all want essentially the same thing – peace, and an end to the killing. Yet no one seems to know how to get it.
