The biggest Heritage Day event is on the streets of Bowness.

Hundreds lined the streets in the northwest community to cheer on cyclists in the criterium; final stage of the Tour de Bowness.

This is the 14th year for the event which is organized by Bow Cycle. Marketing director Bob Grunewald says, “The streets are packed every year. We have a lot of community support.”

The Tour de Bowness attracts cyclists from across Western Canada and this year includes two cyclists from the Netherlands.

Andrew Arnold is a first time racer and says the Tour de Bowess helps raise cycling’s profile. He says, “It’s great that it’s local and the fact we can ride to the race course here in Calgary is awesome.”

The road race is just one of the events happening in the community.

The Bowness Street Festival celebrates the soul of the community.  Organizer Jacqui Esler says the  festival began in 2011 when Bowness celebrated its centennial.  She says, “Bowness was always a great community. It was always tight knit but the flood brought us closer.

Resident Cathy Reitz agrees. “It’s like its own little town in the city. You know your neighbours. It has soul.”
