A 53-year-old man has been taken to hospital in critical condition after he was hit by a CTrain near Erlton Station in the city’s south end.

Emergency crews were called to Macleod Trail and 25 Avenue at about 8:20 a.m. and witnesses say it appeared that the man was running to try and catch the train when he was hit.

The driver of the train tried an emergency stop but was unable to avoid hitting the man.

Passengers were removed from the train and the morning commute was impacted by road closures while police investigated.

Police say crossing signals were activated at the time but it is not clear if the man was wearing a headset and did not hear them.

“We don’t know at this point whether he had earbuds in. The train driver advised that she honked several times, the male didn’t react, opened the gates, the bell as well as the arm and flashing lights were working, male ran in front of the train and was struck. She was unable to stop the train in time,” said CPS Sgt  Joerg Gottschling from the Traffic Section.

The injured man was taken to Foothills Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Calgary Transit is providing shuttle buses between 39 Avenue and City Hall.

Police say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
