The Calgary Police Service is investigating a Sunday morning death on Deerfoot Trail near the 130 Avenue Southeast overpass.

Shortly after 3:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to the southbound lanes of the highway followed the discovery of a deceased man on the road.

Police have determined the 21-year-old man was a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle, possibly an SUV. The man had suffered injuries to his head that proved fatal.

The identity of the deceased has not been released. The Medical Examiner responded to the scene.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours in the vicinity of the incident. All lanes of Deerfoot Trail reopened to traffic shortly before 10:00 a.m.

The investigation into the incident continues. Anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the crash or has information regarding the location of the damaged vehicle is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service traffic unit, 403-567-4000, or Crime Stoppers.
