The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is looking at various scenarios to address a predicted shortage of telephone numbers in Alberta and southern Ontario.

The CRTC says it was advised by the Canadian Numbering Administrator that Alberta’s 403, 587 and 780 area codes will likely run out by June 2018 and the Ontario 226 and 519 codes will be used up by 2017.

The communications regulator has started a process to address the issue and is establishing Relief Planning Committees to evaluate various solutions and recommendations.

The CRTC is inviting members of the public and telecommunications industry to participate in these committees and says it will then make a decision on the most appropriate option for each region.
