53-year-old Wayne Howard Bernard of Kingston, Ontario has been arrested in Kingston after a lengthy standoff.

Officers allege he took a hostage before police were able to talk him out of the home.

Police have been hunting for Bernard in relation to a kidnapping and sexual assault that happened in Calgary 20 years ago.

In the early morning hours of March 28, 1995, a woman in her 50’s was working in a restaurant along Macleod Trail South when a man forced his way into the locked business and assaulted her.

Police say he then forced the woman into her own vehicle and drove her to the outskirts of the city.

The man took off in her vehicle after he sexually assaulted her and left her on the side of the road.

The victim managed to flag down a passing vehicle and call 911.

After an extensive investigation the Sex Crimes unit was unable to track down the culprit.

Calgary Police Service Sex Crimes Unit investigators continued to work on the case and finally received a match from the DNA Data Bank linking Bernard to the evidence collected in 1995.

Bernard has been charged with:

  • Commercial break and enter
  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual assault with a weapon
  • Kidnapping
  • Threats to kill
  • Robbery
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
