Police have released the identity of a man who died after he was found unconscious in a park downtown and say he was murdered.

Emergency crews were called to a waterpark near 7 Avenue and 8 Street SW at about 11:00 p.m. Sunday for reports of a man in medical distress

Brian Blackkettle, 35, was found unresponsive and was transported to hospital where he later died.

An autopsy on Monday confirmed his identity and determined his death to be a homicide.

Police believe Blackkettle was hit by another man in what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

Investigators also believe the offender and the victim were known to each other and the incident was not random. This is Calgary’s 22nd homicide of 2014.
