Investigators believe a man who was found dead in the middle of a road in northeast Calgary early Monday morning was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

Police were called to a road on 16 Avenue and Barlow Trail at around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

They found the body of a 20-year-old man at the side of the road.

Officers believe that a vehicle was westbound on 16 Avenue, exiting the highway onto the Barlow Trail South off ramp.

At that point, the vehicle struck the man before swerving onto the grass median. The vehicle got back onto the road and fled the scene, westbound on 16 Avenue.

Emergency crews determined that the victim sustained a fatal head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The pedestrian was dragged approximately 20 to 30 meters before the vehicle went offroad, drove on the median for some distance, before returning back onto 16th avenue. As a result of this collision the 20 year old died and the vehicle left the scene," said CPS Sgt. Colin Foster.

Police are looking for a blue vehicle with significant front-end damage and say the driver would have been fairly certain that they had hit someone.

Police have located a vehicle matching this description, a Hyundai Santa Fe, in the 2400 block of Vermilion Street N.E. but have not yet determined if it was the vehicle involved in the crash.

They have taken the female owner of the vehicle in for questioning.

"At the moment I would say she is a person of interest and they have given us an account and we have to see if that account will hold up," said Sgt Fraser.
