Police are now investigating the suspicious death of a child in southeast Calgary in December of last year as a homicide.

At about 3:30 p.m. on December 19, emergency crews were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Erin Ridge Road S.E. for reports of a young girl in medical distress.

The child, identified as Olive Rebekah Oluwafemi, 4, was in cardiac arrest and was not breathing when crews arrived.

The girl was transported to hospital, but was declared dead a short time later.

Investigators looking into the case originally classified Olive’s death as suspicious, due to choking, but a review of additional evidence has changed that to a homicide.

"We have been working with the Medical Examiner and have determined that her death was not the result of choking," says Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm with the CPS Homicide Unit.

Police say that the injuries that led to her death all occurred within the family home and are not consistent with play, an accident, or medical intervention such as CPR.

The CPS Homicide Unit has interviewed Olive’s parents and is continuing their investigation.

Her parents were the only ones home at the time Olive was found in medical distress. Chisholm says that Olive was an only child.

The cause of her death is not being released.

No one has been charged in connection with her death so far.

"We have identified potential suspects," says Chisholm. "The parents are not being cooperative with us."

Chisholm says they believe others may have information about Olive's death and they are asking them to come forward with anything they can share with investigators.

"Child death investigations are incredibly complex investigations to undergo. There are a number of steps that we have to undertake to complete an investigation, therefore, the details of those investigations and the steps we do have to undertake, will be released, if at any time, when charges are laid."
