The Calgary Police Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding July’s death of five-year-old Eneas Emilio Perdomo.

In the early hours of July 10, the young boy was brought to a medical centre by members of his family for treatment of a number of injuries he allegedly suffered during numerous accidents.Due to the life threatening nature of the child's injuries, he was rushed to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Hospital staff noticed swelling and bruises covering the child’s body. The following week, the boy’s injuries proved fatal and he passed away in hospital.

Police identified the deceased as five-year-old Eneas Emilio Perdomo.

An autopsy confirmed Emilio had suffered numerous serious injuries and was severely bruised and swollen. The cause of the child's death has not been released.

"Emilio was extremely injured," said CPS Staff Sergeant Michael Cavilla. "We believe the injuries not to be accidental but to be inflicted."

"There were some injuries that did occur over a period of time, however, we believe that the injuries that he was admitted for (occurred) on July 9, 2015. We're very interested in what happened on that day."

Emilio had been living with non-biological family members, three adults and two teenagers, in a southeast Calgary home for several months after leaving his undisclosed homeland.

The living arrangement was the result of an agreement between Emilio's biological mother, who remains outside of Canada, and extended family, Canadian citizens, in Calgary. Emilio arrived in Canada alone, he has not been adopted and his biological father was not a part of the child's life.

"The investigation has now determined that Emilio was in good health upon his arrival into Canada in February of 2015 which is not consistent with statements provided by family members to date," said Cavilla.

Investigators have not identified a suspect but police say they are focusing their efforts on Emilio’s family members who spent time with the young boy in the weeks leading up to his death.

"Emilio was in the exclusive care of family members on July 9 and the days preceding that as well. Emilio was not in the care of any daycare or outside guardianship, and Emilio had not previously attended school in Canada."

Cavilla said the five people who lived with Emilio have been questioned by police.

"We interviewed all five individuals and obtained statements from all five."

Cavilla says police have talked with Emilio's biological mother and she has been extremely cooperative with investigators.
