Calgary police say an on-duty officer lost a magazine loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition on the evening of April 28, 2016.

The officer was working in District 8 at the time, an area that includes all communities south of Fish Creek Park. The magazine fell out of his belt some time between 3:30 and 5 pm, likely in Midnapore, Shawnessy or Silverado.

“The lost ammunition is a type of round that is commonly available to gun owners, and it poses minimal risk to the public without a firearm,” said Staff Sgt. Darrell Hesse. “The magazine only fits one type of handgun and poses no risk to the public on its own, however, we still need to locate the items to make sure they are secure and never used in the commission of a crime.”

The officer who lost the magazine has been an officer for 13 years, 6 with the Calgary Police Service. The service issued an apology to the public for the incident.

“The trust of Calgarians is something the service does not take for granted and we recognize that incidents like this can undermine your trust” said Staff Sgt. Hesse.

Officers searched the area where it’s believed the magazine fell out but didn’t find it, and are asking for public assistance to secure the magazine and ammunition.
