A single vehicle collision in the southeast has prompted the closure of the Southland Drive overpass atop Deerfoot Trail.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., a witness called 911 after seeing an ATV travelling erratically westbound on Highway 22X approaching Calgary. The vehicle was observed swerving into the path of oncoming traffic and it entered the ditch on two occasions before returning to the road.

“We received a call about a quad that was travelling westbound on Stoney Trail,” said Acting Sgt. Dave DenTandt with the CPS Traffic Section. “An RCMP member happened to be in the area when the vehicle passed him and the RCMP followed.”

“The vehicle proceeded to get off onto Deerfoot Trail going northbound,” said Acting Sgt. DenTandt. “It eventually got off at the Southland Drive exit and lost control of the vehicle hitting the curb median.”

The driver and the quad landed on a walking path near the Sue Higgins dog park. Police determined the female driver was approximately 21 years old and developmentally delayed.

EMS transported the female patient to Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life threatening condition.

Police closed the off-ramp from northbound Deerfoot Trail to Southland Dr. S.E. and Southland Drive was closed in both directions on the Deerfoot Trail overpass.

CPS members are on scene investigating the crash and directing traffic.
